5 Activities to do in the Lake District this Autumn

If you’re planning to explore the Lake District this Autumn, make sure that these 5 activities are on the itinerary. You won’t want to miss out.

Whisky and Chocolate Pairing Tour at the Lakes Distillery

One of the UK’s top attractions and a must-visit for all whisky connoisseurs The Lakes Distillery offers a range of tours but this one is our favourite Lake

District activities on a rainy Autumn day.  During the tour, you will learn how single malt whisky evolves from cask to glass to create a sumptuous sherry-led flavour. Then comes the best part – a guided tasting!

Pairing two of the Lakes Distillery’s whiskies with handmade, award-winning truffles from artisan master-chocolatier, Iain Burnett. Here you will learn how matching unique and complex flavour profiles can transform your taste experience and enrich your palate. It is a truly fascinating experience and one not to miss. Ullswater Steamers Experience

Whether you’re just looking for a peaceful day out or want to finish a walk in style, there’s nothing better than a cruise across one of the Lake District’s most spectacular lakes on the Ullswater Steamer.

As you make your way across Ullswater, you’ll see some of the best views of the Lake District including the dramatic fells of Hellvelyn and Blencathra. Enjoy Autumn in all its glory and the Unesco World Heritage Site at its best, as the colours of the season create a breathtaking vista.

The Ullswater Steamer operates until the 24th October and adult tickets start from £16. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, you will need to book in advance. Click here for more information or to book.

Spa and Beauty Treatments

Whilst the colours of Autumn are beautiful to look at, the season can leave us all feeling a little dull as the light fades and that essential vitamin D dose reduces. That’s why one of our essential activities for this time of year is a trip to a local beauty salon or spa. We love a facial to nourish and brighten the skin, a relaxing hot stone massage and then a manicure to finish so we’re ready for a trip to the restaurant!

There are some great salons close by in Cockermouth just a short walk or drive from the Trout Hotel. Here are some of our suggestions:

Take in the Autumnal Colours from the Gardens at Muncaster Castle

Built originally in the 13th Century, Muncaster Castle is one of the West Lake District’s gems. With a fascinating history, a reputation for being the most haunted castle in Britain and extensive, extraordinary gardens, it’s the perfect place to visit during your stay at the Trout Hotel.

The castle truly comes alive during Autumn with glorious colours in the garden as well as the fells in the distances. Not only that, but it’s also the time when things go bump in the night! Between the 24th and 31st, October Muncaster Castle hosts its Seriously Spooky event. You can enjoy Halloween themed events such as a House of Horrors show, workshops and even the Witch Warbler trials.

Adult tickets for the House and Garden start from £10.63 and to find out more about the Seriously Spooky event click here

Discover the History of Lake District Slate at Honister Slate Mine

Just outside of Keswick, in the heart of the Lake District, you’ll find Honister Slate mine, one of the last working slate mines in England. Mining 450-million-year-old volcanic green slate since 1728.

Take a trip deep underground on one of their Mine Tours and discover Honister’s rich mining history as you navigate through tunnels and caverns in Fleetwith Pike while you listen to stories of the miners. It’s perfect for a wet Autumn day out.

However, if you’re feeling brave, visit on a sunny day and experience the glorious colours of the Lake District as you traverse the gorge on an Infinity Bridge 2,000 feet above the valley floor.

Mine Tours are £17.50 for adults and the Infinity Bridge is £25 per person. For more information and to see other exciting adventures click here.
