PRICES START FROM £314.50 – based on two adults and two children sharing a family room.
Following a scenic drive from The Trout Hotel, during which you’ll feast your eyes upon mesmerizing countryside and coastal views, you’ll find yourself in the presence of the majestic Muncaster Castle and Gardens and Ravenglass Railway. These two locations have been named as two of the best family attractions in the Lake District – but don’t take our word for it, we thoroughly recommend that you go and see for yourselves.
Here, you can treat the troops to a glorious day out in the Lake District National Park. The historic site offers a visit to a haunted castle, owl centre, playground and train ride with plenty of space to roam the dramatic gardens and burn off a little energy. Nestled in 77 acres of woodland and gardens and set against a idyllic backdrop of the western fells, Muncaster Castle is a key part of the region’s history. The Hawk & Owl Centre (open daily mid-Feb to 23 December) is also a big draw and shows a sensational bird of prey flying display and a wild heron feed.
After a morning at Muncaster, the next stop of your fun-filled itinerary is the Ravenglass Railway – or the La’al Ratty Railway as it’s affectionately known by the locals. Originally opened in 1875 to bring iron ore from Eskdale to the Furness Railway, today it’s a narrow gauge steam attraction and one of the best little trains in the world. The journey takes you through beautiful countryside and coastal land and you can hop on and off and explore the sights along the way – but do remember to bring a few layer encase the sea breeze is a little cold.
If you feel like you could fit in one last activity before heading back to The Trout, there is a railway museum in Ravenglass with a wealth of relics, photographs, models and audio-visual on show.
The Muncaster Castle & Ravenglass Railway Experience costs from £314.50 for two adults and two children sharing a family room. It includes a night’s accommodation at the Trout Hotel with a freshly prepared breakfast cooked to order and a family ticket to Muncaster Castle and the Ravenglass to Eskdale Railway.
