Mountain Biking Break

FROM £193 FOR TWO PEOPLE

Steep drops, intense runs, sweeping berms and breathtaking views – Whinlatter Forest is the ultimate Lake District Mountain Bike Experience and puts the ‘mountain’ back into mountain biking.

Combine an action packed weekend at The Trout Hotel with either a half or full day of riding in England’s only true mountain forest. Rising 1000ft above sea level, Whinlatter Forest near Keswick provides a thrilling range of trails and something to suit everyone. It’s home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trail in the whole of the Lake District and is becoming the place to go to satisfy all your mountain bike cravings.

The trails

Less than a 20 minute drive from The Trout’s front door, the specifically carved and ever-growing mountain bike trails await you.

The Altura (red grade) trail has been built for experienced riders with good off road skills and a high level of fitness. This 19km track also has 15km of new single track, including popular features like berms, jumps, rock features, skinnies, corkscrews and table tops.

The Quercus (blue grade) trail  is an 8km route that includes an option of doing a moderate  3.4km run as well. The entire trail meanders up, over and around the lower section of the forest and skips the big climbs of the Altura trail.

If all of this sounds appealing, imagine being immersed in majestic views of serene lakes and rugged fells whilst you’re steering. Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite, Helvellyn and Skiddaw will all be coming along for the ride, as the trail takes you to an altitude of 500m above Keswick.

Other Options

For any member of the party that might not want to ride, the visitor centre has a gift shop and restaurant and there are plenty of walking trails and children’s playgrounds to choose from.

Ospreys and red squirrels are known to nest in the area so in the right season, there is always a chance to see a beautiful endangered creature.

The Ultimate Lake District Mountain Bike Experience costs from £178.00 for two people and includes a night’s accommodation at the Trout Hotel, a freshly prepared breakfast cooked to order and three hours bike hire for two.
