Just outside of Keswick, in the heart of the Lake District, you’ll find Honister Slate mine, one of the last working slate mines in England. Mining 450-million-year-old volcanic green slate since 1728. 

Take a trip deep underground on one of the fully-guided Mine Tours and discover Honister’s rich mining history as you navigate through tunnels and caverns learning what life was like for the miners over the centuries. With enhanced reality technology and explosive special effects, you’ll be transported back in time.

Mine tours take approximately 90 minutes, involve uneven terrain plus descending approximately 50 steps (with a handrail).
