MIREHOUSE & GARDENS- By Bassenthwaite Lake

Situated a short twenty minute drive from The Trout Hotel, a scenic Cumbrian route finds you in the blooming “Heather Maze” and victorian “Terraced Gardens” of Mirehouse. Elegantly located along the serene shores of Bassenthwaite lake, Mirehouse has been the family home of The Spedding’s since 1802. A beautiful country manor house with exquisite interiors- live piano music contributes to a relaxing atmosphere, in which children are actively welcomed to learn and explore.

Historically informative, with an interesting display of manuscripts by Wordsworth, Tennyson, Francis Bacon and John Constable, the woodland playground and garden activities also offer an adventurous retreat for excitable kids- making Mire House & Gardens a fantastic “for all” ages family day out in the Lakes.

Venturing slightly further afield, your second country house and garden experience, leads you to the ancient Cumbrian house of Hutton-in-the-Forest -a 30 mile drive from The Trout Hotel. A part of the estates belonging to Lord Inglewood, the estate was historically referred to in 1292 when Thomas de Hoton was made Crown Forester of Inglewood Forest. Since then, the house has passed through the generations of the Fletcher family, who now invite you to delve into the rich history of the houses’ interiors and architecture.

Providing a variety of entertainment for all ages, Hutton-in-the-Forest offers a memorable visit for families, couples and friends alike. Whether you choose to explore Hutton’s vast formal gardens and woodland walks, where the kids will be occupied by how many Red Squirrels and Roe Deer they can count, or whether you take the opportunity to admire the early William Morris wallpapers which still adorn the houses interiors- The Trout are confident that your day won’t be forgotten.
